Construction number 114. Built in 1980.
Registered in France as F-WZEN for pre-delivery test
flights. First flight June 16, 1980. Registered in
Pakistan as AP-BBA for PIA. Delivered to PIA on August 27,
1980. In 1997, AP-BBA was named "City of Nawab Shah" to
celebrate Pakistan's 50 years of independence. On March 1, 2004, AP-BBA was operating PIA post-Hajj
flight PK-2002 from Jeddah to Quetta with 12 crew members
and 261 passengers on board. At around 1:40AM, AP-BBA
aborted take-off at very high speed after the left main gear tyres blew. Undercarriage suffered serious damage, flying
metal pieces from fragmented wheel assemblies of nose gear
struck fan blades of both engines and caused serious damage
to both engines. Aircraft was declared constructive total
loss. According to investigations conducted by Saudi
authorities, defective tyres were the cause of this
accident. AP-BBA was
withdrawn from use after this accident and later was parted
out and broken up at Jeddah King Abdulaziz International
Airport, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Registration AP-BBA
removed from Pakistan Aircraft Register on September 6,
2004. |
