Construction number 12501,
United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), serial number 42-92674, delivery
February 11, 1944. To Royal Air Force (RAF) as Dakota III,
serial KG466, Montreal,
February 29, 1944. TOC N Am March 14, 1944. Mediterranean
Allied Air Forces (MAAF), September 28, 1944. Air Command
South East Asia (ACSEA) May 30, 1946. To Government of India, January 30,
1947. Registered in India as VT-CJT, Orient Airways, March
1947. Registered in India as VT-CPI, for Orient Airways, 1947. Registration VT-CPI not taken up by Orient
Airways. Initially VT-CP* registration series starting from
registration VT-CPA from India's civil aircraft register was
reserved for aircraft to be registered in then newly
independent Pakistan. However registrations in Indian series
VT-CP* were not taken up by aircraft to be registered in
Pakistan and eventually registration of those aircraft began
in Pakistan with Pakistan's own aircraft registration
nationality mark. Registered in Pakistan as AP-AAI on October 1, 1947 for Orient
Airways. Transferred to Pakistan International Airlines
(PIA) on April 1, 1955. Flown by PIA with designation
Douglas DC-3 Dakota. Registration AP-AAI removed from
Pakistan Aircraft Register. Aircraft re-registered in
Pakistan as AP-AJS on May 12,
1957, apparently due to in aircraft's registration AP-AAI,
letter/alphabet 'I' = 'India' in international Radio Telephony (RT)
communication. Because of poor diplomatic relations between
Pakistan and India at that time. Pakistani aircraft
registrations containing letter/alphabet 'I' were re-registered and
new registration issued to these aircraft did not include
letter/alphabet 'I'. AP-AJS crashed on tidal flats in Bay of Bengal on July 1,
1957, off Charlakhi Island, East Pakistan. Was
flying from Chittagong to Dacca with 4 crew members and 20
passengers onboard. All 4 crew members and 20 passengers
died in this accident. Registration AP-AJS removed from
Pakistan Aircraft Register on September 23, 1957. |
